* What is a court certification or sworn translation?

Court certification is the official certification of conformity of a translation to its original text. The translator guarantees the truthfulness and loyalty of the translation by official declaration given in the Registry of the Court. The translator may swear on oath and thus certify an extrajudicial translation before a Court Registrar or a notary.

Which documents are necessary?

For a court certification, the original document or an authenticated copy or photo copy thereof are necessary to which is attached the translation and the oath statement. These are filed together. The document is stamped with a revenue stamp amounting to 16 euros per every 4 pages of text.

** What is an authenticated translation with apostille?

The authenticated translation attests the legal validity. The authenticated translation is requested when the document must be invoked and used legally abroad.

Who authenticates the original document?

The Public Prosecutor in Court authenticates judicial and notarial acts whereas the Prefecture authenticates other administrative acts.

Who authenticates the translated document?

The Public Prosecutor. The text to be authenticated or appended with an apostille is filed with the Registry of the Prosecutor's Office in Court. The text is subsequently handed back within 3-5 days from the date of filing.
